Our Chicago podiatrist uses orthotics to treat painful conditions such as flat feet, heel spurs, plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the thick tissue on the bottom of the foot) and neuromas (swollen or thickened nerve in the ball of your foot). Orthotics are shoe inserts that are custom made to fit you and are meant to correct an abnormal or irregular walking pattern, by slightly altering the angles at which your foot hit a walking or running surface. Flat feet occur when the arch on the inside of your feet is flattened, allowing your entire foot to touch the floor when you stand up. A common and usually painless condition, flat feet may occur when the arches don’t develop during childhood. In other cases, flat feet can be caused by an injury or from the simple wear-and-tear and stresses of age. Flat feet can also promote problems in your ankles and knees because the condition may force your ankles to turn inward and throw off the alignment of your legs. If you aren’t experiencing any pain, no treatment is usually needed for flat feet.
Our Chicago podiatrist, Robert L. Potempa, DPM, provides exceptional podiatric care and stays educated on cutting-edge research and technology, strongly believing in passing that along to our patients. Our Chicago podiatrist can recommend and prescribe the specific orthotics that will correct or improve your foot or ankle condition. People can begin to develop foot conditions from disease, injury or overuse. Pedorthics is the modification and design of special footwear, and foot orthotics that can ease these conditions.
