When a patient has Chicago Illinois heel pain, it is most often caused by overuse, and not due to a specific heel injury. This overuse can be caused by wearing shoes that offer poor support, frequently running and jumping on hard surfaces, or landing awkwardly on your heel. There are many different treatments for heel pain, depending on the severity of the pain, and the exact diagnosis. The good news is that most of the time heel pain is treated with more conservative and nonsurgical approaches. Heel pain is often caused by walking gait abnormalities that end up putting too much stress on the heel bone and the tissues that are attached to it. Often times, the heel pain can be caused by a heel spur which is a bony growth that is found on the underside of the heel bone. This can easily be diagnosed by x-ray, however if there is no indication of bone enlargement, this heel pain may simply be referred to as heel spur syndrome. Poorly fitting shoes that provide little support, or even being overweight can contribute to heel pain. Heel pain is frequently associated with an inflammation of the connective tissues that run along the bottom of the foot from the heel to the ball of the foot. When this inflammation is present, the condition is called plantar fasciitis; it is very common among athletes who run and jump often. Some diseases can also cause heel pain such as rheumatoid arthritis. Custom orthotics are often helpful in treating patients with heel pain. Padding and taping as well as injections can be helpful in reducing heel pain.
