Heel pain is a common condition, usually caused by overuse, rather than injury. It can be caused by many different things including: wearing shoes that offer poor support; running too frequently on hard surfaces; sudden turning of your heal; landing awkwardly on your heel; heel spurs; a stress fracture; tendonitis; arthritis; nerve irritation among other reasons. Chicago heel pain is treated in different ways, depending on the cause and severity of the pain.
Sometimes treatment of Chicago heel pain is as easy as wearing special shoes, or shoes with orthotic inserts. However, it is important to see Dr. Potempa so that your heel pain can be accurately diagnosed. If you are seriously overweight or have a job that calls for long hours standing, this can also cause or contribute to heel pain. To determine the exact cause of the heel pain, Dr. Potempa will take your medical history and examine your foot. There may also be need for x-rays or other imaging tools. Non-surgical treatments can include: stretching exercises; walking only with shoes; using an ice pack on your heel to reduce inflammation; limiting activities; wearing of special shoes or inserts; wearing a nighttime splint; or physical therapy. In only very extreme cases, foot surgery may be necessary. However, the most critical thing for heel pain, is to remember that preventive care is very important to keep the problem from recurring. This can include wearing appropriate shoes / inserts and performing certain at-home exercises. If you are experiencing heel pain, make an appointment to visit with Dr. Potempa so that you will be able to enjoy your day without experiencing any pain in your heel or foot.
